What happens to your body with anorexia?
  • With anorexia, your body doesn't get the energy from foods that it needs, so it slows down.  When energy input is low, and energy output is high, your body begins to make changes to conserve energy.  One change your body makes is to stop ovulation.  During times of starvation, the release of essential brain chemicals that control female hormones (example, Estrogen) and trigger ovulation are temporarily halted.  When ovulation does not occur, a woman cannot get pregnant.  Therefore, anorexia causes infertility.  This also a time of low Estrogen, and can put a woman at increased risk for osteoporosis.  A woman’s menstrual cycle usually can start up again once these low energy conditions are corrected, and a woman has gained enough weight back.
